Troubleshooting

Icons show as boxes or question marks

Your terminal font has no Nerd Font icons. Install a Nerd Font and select it in your terminal, or set icons = false.

Images look blocky

strata asks the terminal which graphics it supports at start and draws images with half blocks when it supports none (or inside tmux). Use a terminal such as kitty, WezTerm, Ghostty, iTerm2, Konsole, foot or Windows Terminal 1.22+, outside of tmux. If yours supports images but strata picked the wrong way to draw them, set image_protocol = "sixel" (or kitty, iterm2) under [general].

Images are blank in VS Code

VS Code's terminal drops images unless "terminal.integrated.enableImages": true is in your settings. Without it strata falls back to half blocks; turn it on and open a new terminal for real images.

"system keychain unavailable"

On Linux, saving NAS passwords needs a Secret Service such as GNOME Keyring or KWallet. WSL has none by default; install gnome-keyring and start it, or let strata ask for the password each time.

The Docker view says Docker is unavailable

strata runs the docker CLI. Check that docker ps works in the same terminal. On WSL, enable your distro under Docker Desktop → Settings → Resources → WSL Integration.

Content search is slow

Install ripgrep. Without it strata falls back to grep, which does not skip ignored files.

Mounting a share fails

Press t on the connection in the NAS view. The diagnosis shows which step fails: name resolution, reaching the server, the mount point or the share. Mount commands run in your terminal, so their own error messages are shown too, and :messages keeps a history of strata's notifications.

Copying a path does nothing

On a local desktop, strata gives copied text to wl-copy, xclip, xsel, pbcopy or clip.exe, whichever is installed. Over SSH it asks your terminal through OSC 52, which most terminals support. Some terminals need it turned on in their settings first. Inside tmux, strata passes the text to tmux load-buffer -w, so it reaches your terminal too. To choose the program yourself, set clipboard = "wl-copy" in the config. clipboard = "osc52" always uses the terminal.

My config is ignored

strata stops with an error when the config has a typo — run it from a terminal to see the message. Check the location with strata --dump-config and compare, or set STRATA_CONFIG_DIR.

Something else

Open an issue on GitHub with your OS, terminal and the output of strata --version.
