Introduction
strata is a terminal file explorer written in Rust. It aims to be the only file manager you need in a terminal: fast, keyboard-driven, good-looking, and extensible with Lua.

What you get
- Multiple panels and tabs — browse several directories side by side, and copy or move between them with one key.
- Complete file operations — copy, move, trash, delete, rename, bulk rename in your editor, and undo for all of them except permanent deletes.
- Search — filter the current folder, fuzzy-find files across a project, or search inside files with ripgrep.
- Previews — syntax-highlighted code, rendered Markdown, images (kitty, sixel, iTerm2 or half blocks), PDFs, video frames, office documents, CSV, JSON/YAML/TOML outlines, SQLite tables, hex dumps, directories and archives.
- Git — modified, added, untracked and ignored markers next to every file, and a menu to diff, stage, commit, and show the log or blame.
- Dashboard — disk space, per-device I/O (IOPS, throughput, latency), memory pressure and disk usage.
- Disk usage view — measure a folder once, then browse what takes up space and trash it, like ncdu.
- Docker — manage containers and browse their filesystems like local folders.
- Remote connections — SMB, NFS and SFTP, plus S3, WebDAV, FTP and any rclone remote, with reachability checks, diagnostics and keychain-stored passwords.
- Archives — browse zip and tar archives like folders (password-protected zips too), extract and create them.
- Tree view, thumbnail grid, tags, trash browser, sync and duplicate finder, saved selections, named layouts and a mouse menu with drag and drop.
- 28 themes, two key presets (vim and classic,
keymap = "default") and Lua plugins.
How it is built
strata is a Cargo workspace with one crate per concern, so each part stays small and testable:
| Crate | What it does |
|---|---|
strata-core | Filesystem backends (local, SFTP, Docker, archives, rclone), file operations, jobs, search, git, undo support, NAS, keychain |
strata-sys | Disks, I/O, memory pressure, disk usage and the Docker CLI |
strata-config | config.toml, keymaps and themes |
strata-plugin | The Lua plugin host |
strata | The terminal UI, built on ratatui |
