Status & limits
phantom is early. This page says plainly what works and what doesn't, so you can decide.
Works
- Registration (token-gated), login, logout, devices.
- Rooms: create, join, leave, invite, send, edit, react, redact, state, aliases, the directory.
- Sync, typing, receipts, presence, account data, push rules.
- Media upload and download.
- End-to-end encryption: device and cross-signing keys, one-time and fallback keys, key backups.
- Room versions 1 through 12; new rooms default to 11.
- Federation between phantom servers, in room versions 11 and 12, including joins, messages and room upgrades.
- HTTPS served directly when
[global.tls]is set. - The admin room, the first account becoming admin, and
!admincommands. - Adding and verifying phone numbers by text message, through an SMS gateway.
- Blocking servers, quarantining media and cancelling admin tasks while the server runs.
- The admin API and every console section.
Doesn't, yet
| Gap | What it means |
|---|---|
| Federation only tried phantom to phantom | it hasn't yet been run against Synapse or another implementation |
| No registration by phone | phone numbers can be added and used for password resets, not to sign up |
| No E2EE in the console | encrypted rooms can't be read there; other clients are fine |
Don't deploy phantom where it matters yet.
