Recording media

Every GIF and screenshot on this site is recorded from the real console, against a real server.

make fonts # once: JetBrains Mono into target/fonts
make media # build the server, then record into website/public/media

cli/cmd/phantom-media does the work:

  1. starts a scratch phantom-server in a temporary directory,
  2. fills it with a small community through the Matrix and admin APIs — five people on named devices, rooms with a conversation, an edit and reactions, uploads, two abuse reports, registration tokens and a backup,
  3. runs the console headless against it, pressing keys and typing as a person would,
  4. renders each frame — the console's own ANSI output — with JetBrains Mono, drawing borders as shapes so they join cleanly,
  5. writes the GIFs with one shared palette, storing only what changed between frames.

The scenes are in cli/cmd/phantom-media/scenes.go. Change one, run make media, and commit what changed under website/public/media.
